The unit is constructed of medium-density fiber board which is a little lighter weight than particle board making it a plus for moving it around. The unit was packaged well and arrived in good condition. However, like other reviewers noted, there were some chipped pieces. I would almost guess they left the factory that way as there was no sign of damage to the outside packaging. Fortunately, the chipped boards were in areas that didnt show. There are no written instructions but the diagrams seemed adequate and I had no trouble assembling the unit. The assembled unit looks good and feels sturdy. I would just caution others about the possible chipped parts and have concern they could be in areas that would show.
