They should let you know that you need a box spring that is 5 inches in height.
This bed is very nice for the money, but your mattress will not fit properly unless your box spring is 5 inches in height. I went ahead and ordered a new box spring since mine was 9 inches. They should let you know this in the description. If it had a lip on the side rails you could use slats but since there is not a lip you are out of luck.
