For the price, this desk is pretty amazing. Ive been keen on upgrading my old desk to something a little more music studio-esque, but Im not ready to dish out a pretty penny for the perfect custom desk until Im ready to actually build a legit studio. Till then, this gets the job done perfectly.
Someone else in the reviews summed it up perfectly, but Ive gone ahead and added photos to show that Ive got the same usages as well! It fits the Native Instruments S61 pretty much to a tee (to the point that Im mildly worried that the edges of the sliding shelf will end up scratching the sides of my keyboard, but hey, nothing wrong with usage scars in my book!). In other words, if your keyboard is more than 39.5, you might want to consider either putting it on the top of the desk, or getting a different desk altogether.
The rack space is pretty great with its 4Ux2 of space. Just know that if you dont have experience with racks, the instructions dont show you the right places to install the placeholder screws. Also, it only comes with enough screws to insert 6 1U equipments, so if youve got a full 8 pieces of 1U equipment, youll need to grab four extra screws. No biggie.
In my experience, the top shelf is pretty high. If youve got your chair at just the right height for your legs to fit under the keyboard shelf, youll still be breaking your neck looking up. At least if youre using a 40 television as your computer monitor like I am lol. I might end up investing in adjustable monitor mounts when I eventually upgrade my screen situation to dual 27 inchers, but till then, its not horrible as is. Just something to keep in mind.
That other reviewer that mentioned the shelf in the back is genius. It fits a USB hub perfectly, and even my external drive hanging on it by a thread gets it out of my way lol. Ill probably end up throwing more stuff on there for funsies down the line too.
Im too lazy to take all the measurements, but the other reviews do it justice. Probably not big enough for an 88 keyboard or a 34 ultrawide 27 monitor combo, but what can ya do. For the price of around 200 bucks, its got everything else you need.
The cup holder can fit some pretty large cups. I keep a 32 ouncer in there for water fillups, and it could even fit a larger cup. Just note that it will not fit a handled cup for your coffee or tea, but I mean theres so much desk space, you can have four cups of coffee just sitting around if you want. The headphone holder is large enough for my HD650s and could honestly probably fit a second pair. Im mildly worried that with enough weight, these little holders could get ripped out since theyre held in by two fairly small screws on the underside of the desk, but Ill cross that bridge when I get there.
I will say, it shakes around like hell if I bump into it. I hit it pretty hard with my chair scooting in once that my framed picture fell off the whole dang desk. Its a cheap frame that barely stands up on its own, but still. Keep that in mind. Im considering taking off the casters to see if that keeps er a little more steady, but Im also lazy, so Ill probably just deal with it. Not a game changer in the slightest.
Finally, mine wasnt packed all too great. The Styrofoam was torn to shreds in the box and I had to vacuum up real good after unboxing it. It also came with a few (large) scratches, but with the (kind of weirdly hypnotic) finish on the desk, its hardly noticeable, especially now that Ive got miscellaneous junk filling in all the blank space. The aluminum(?) back (the part with the holes that has the lip that can hold stuff I mentioned earlier) also came kind of bent up, but again, I dont notice it now that everythings been put together. Just another thing to keep in mind.
Overall, I love the thing, and Im not going to dock any stars for the minor flaws. The 4Ux2 rack space is a dream for my 18i20, miscellaneous DI/reamp/Cloudlifter shelf, and future dream upgrades, and unless youre a professional with a lot of outboard gear, itll prove to be more than enough room. The sizing is perfect (though cutting it down to a hair) for 61 key keyboards plus everything you can fit on the mid shelf. If youre a hobbyist producer and see this desk going for 200 or less, get it!
Awesome Desk!
